Survey on Cute Little Laptops/Netbooks

Feb 21, 2009 16:11

I tried the little Dell Inspiron mini in October. It went back after a couple of weeks --- the keyboard was small and annoying; it crashed all the time, even in Linux; it felt cheap; and, adding insult to injury --- the webcam made me look like Alan Rickman. HP has some good netbooks, Acer's line is well known and fairly popular, as are Eee's. I don't know the reliability of any of those companies but most major computer companies are building netbooks now, so it's a matter of seeing what works.

Dell obviously doesn't.
It depends on what you're looking for. Most of them come with a standard set of features (4-6 cell battery, Intel Atom processor, Windows XP or some Linux variant) and very few come with anything greater than a wee bitty webcam.

My recommendation is look around first, see if there are any companies that (if you choose Linux) doesn't modify the kernel. See which size might work best for you. Also- going into a store just to see how they feel when you type with them (you know, one of those big chain electronic stores. What? don't laugh!) because I know how much you dislike the feel of plastic-y keys.

I have an EEE pc. It's pretty good for most things I do at home (email, web surfing, word processing), but I'm not too fond of the Xandros OS that comes with it by default. Still, that's customizable and I can replace it if I feel like it.

Right now, the EEE pc is my home machine. I just connect it to an external USB drive, and go from there.

Lenovo thinkpad and I like it. V. has a tinier one. They do onsite service at your home and I like that and have used it for a keyboard issue.
