13S078-03 - Truth and Lies

So, this is a flood. A subtle notion of the term, don't you think? The details are inconsistent, but it's a fascinating phenomenon.

[Private to Buffy]
My, but you have led an interesting life, haven't you?

Private to Rex]
Do you know anything about the condition known as a Barge coma?

Very little, I'm afraid. I know the body is effectively in a state of stasis-- no muscle atrophy, no need for hydration or nourishment, no waste disposal. Vital signs are normal, healthy. Brain activity... I haven't had a chance to observe, myself.

Why?

Quite unlike a conventional coma, then. It almost sounds like a state of suspended animation.

Apparently I have spent the past month and a half in one.

Do you have any recollection of what you were doing immediately prior to it?

I do. I was in my cabin, perusing a selection of texts my warden was gracious enough to request from the Admiral for me.

What you call fascinating the sane people call annoying as fuck.

Is that so? I take it then that you are not among the affected.

No, I'm not. You aren't either?

I don't think so. I feel no particular compulsion to discuss my sexual habits over the network, which so far seems to be the primary symptom.

Yep. Interesting is one word to explain my life. Also, I would accept tragic and/or epic.

[Blink.] What have you heard?

A few things.

[This is voice, so if Buffy listens closely, she might hear the soft rustle of pages being turned.]

I can certainly understand now why you were chosen to be my warden.

[Still oblivious.] Like what?

[Then, wait. What. What was that noise. Her voice gets a little more urgent.] What do you have?

Oh, a simple volume of no particular concern. Philotics, I believe.

[He closes the file.] Would you like to meet> I believe we have some catching up to do.

Yes, and I'm a lot cleverer than I was in port, so don't think you have that advantage.

But I'm not trying to fool you. Perhaps you've simply been here so long you see conspiracy everywhere.

I doubt those affected will find this 'fascinating' once they regain their senses. [And CLU's so unaffected this time around. It feels nice, for once.]

We'd all be much better off if these disturbances were completely eliminated.

No, but that's just part of the procedure. No person would willingly submit themselves to such extensive psychological altering. As far as psy-ops go, it's a remarkably effective practice, if indeed that is the practice's purpose.

Perhaps so. That doesn't change the fact that there's very little that we can do about them.

systmadmin September 30 2011, 10:29:34 UTC
Of course. Then you believe these floods might be intentional in some way?

And as I understand. [Apparently irreparable anomalies within the system. Shudder. He'd still like to think there's a way to stop them.]

I wouldn't doubt it. We are on a prison ship, after all. Psychological manipulation has long been a tactic used in controlling inmate populations.

... you're not like the rest of them, are you? [There's something about this one. Something about his speech. While not accented, there's something forced and unnatural about his conversational tone, almost as if it's merely an adept mimicry.]
