this isn't regarding bettas, but my boyfriend & i have a flame tetra whose swim bladder was injured a while ago. tonight we found him face-first in a plant with his tail chewed off. we would like to euthanise him ASAP (he's currently floating in a net so the rest of the fish don't nibble at him) using the clove oil/alcohol method, but all he has in ( Read more... )

No, rubbing alcohol won't work. It needs to be vodka.

Well, it'll *work*, in the sense that the fish will die. But then, flushing it will *also* "work" in the sense that the fish will be dead. It's just a matter of how much the fish suffers.

To onexlastxfacade, you might consider doing the "cut off his head" thing, if you need to euthanize quickly. I mean, it's hard for *you*, but it's quick for the fish. Ultimately, though, you have to decide if you have a steady enough hand for it.

thanks for the info. i don't think the boy or i could deal with cutting off the poor guy's head. i haven't talked to him yet today (the fish is at his house), but he had planned on borrowing some from a neighbor.
