betta fish problems

My sister's friend is babysitting a betta fish and she just nocticed it was swimming on it's side. I didn't think there is any bubble-thing things in/on him, but I haven't seen him, I just think they would have mentioned it to be if there was.

What could be the problem and how do we go about to fix it?

Yeah, they feed him everyday without any fasting days. >.>

Start by fasting him for a couple days. Once he's swimming right again, start feeding him less, and try to convince them to add a weekly fasting day.
