Stranded! for imtherookie

Of course, it would happen that they had to get a flat tire on a nearly deserted road that cut through the middle of a rather large forest; this couldn't have happened five hours ago when they were on the freeway, and any number of roadside assistance services were easily accessible. On top of that, it was cold, gloomy, and sprinkling off and on ( Read more... )

"You only have one spare in the back, right?" Van Pelt tried to keep them focused on the task at hand, and not their ride together. She knew how to change a tire, but if they only had one, they'd still be stuck.

She flipped her cell open, then shut it. "Great." No signal, which means no help til they could hike back to the nearest gas station. The great thing about Northern California was how sparse the towns were...except when you were stranded. It was several miles away, and it felt like a storm was rolling in. "Yeah," Lisbon sighed, kneeling down to inspect the damage to one of the tires. Not that viewing the shredded rubber up close did anything useful, but it distracted her momentarily from the bigger picture, the reality that they would be stuck here overnight.

Lisbon had, at least, a rudimentary collection of supplies one might need should an emergency like this arise: a few bottles of water, a thermal blanket, flashlight, and a first aid kit. And they had their weapons, of course, should the need arise.

"The guys are probably still on the road." Though they'd taken a different route, stopping to interview some of the victim's family residing in a trailer park off of the main highway. The plan was that they'd all rendezvous sometime later tonight, which obviously wouldn't be happening now.

"I'm sure they'll come looking for us when we don't make the meet-up." Grasping for hope in dismal situations was as much a defense mechanism as it was survival. The first page in the Army survival handbook was 'will to survive'.

She looked up at what clouds she could make out above the treetops. "Weather looks kind of bad; we should find shelter. Unless you want to sleep in the car overnight."

She wouldn't be the agent Lisbon had come to know if she weren't searching for the silver lining. It actually grounded Lisbon sometimes, brought her clarity and made it easier to focus on the task at hand when she knew she didn't have to worry about Van Pelt getting anxious or fearful.

Lisbon shook her head and stood. "Been a while since I drove through this area, but I do remember there being some cabins nearby."
