Exploring Percival's headspace! I say that, but I think it's really just like one giant relationship meme for Byakuran. :(
Okay! So Percival is in some weird sort of not!relationship with Byakuran. Or is it a relationship? I'm not even sure myself. :|a But before we go into that, a little background relationship blather from his home world.
Percival is known for flirting with all the ladies back at home, and he even has fanclubs! Needless to say, he is quite the popular fellow. Whatever relationships he has, though, Percy doesn't really seem to keep them. After all, you never hear about him talk about a lady he's courting, and well, you never run into a "jealous girlfriend" when talking to the NPCs in game.
On that note, I think that deep down, he only thinks romantically of Chris, his leader. She is, shall we say, the important female in his life. He's pledged his life to her as a knight, but I think it extends a bit further than that, in a personal sense. Despite this, I'm not really sure he'll ever get his love returned. He's got competition from the rest of the knights, and well, Chris appears to be completely unaffected by their romantic advances. Still! I think he'll always have this soft spot for her, regardless of what happens.
SO THAT'S AT HOME.
Percival thinks of his stay at camp as something akin to a really messed up and very extended vacation. By this I mean that he doesn't really take anything here too seriously, as he acts with the knowledge that one day he'll leave. It's something like a "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" sort of mentality.
This is not to say that he is constantly acting like a total idiot or doesn't think about the relationships he has here. It's just that he's more willing to go with the flow here and accept things that he might normally not be too keen to partake in. In other words, the consequences won't follow him home, so he's more willing to take chances. Plus, while he's not the type to act on a spur of the moment impulse, I think he's enough of an action-oriented person to do things that strike his interest without too much prodding.
WHICH IS WHERE BYAKURAN FINALLY COMES IN.
Percy first met Byakuran during the... "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" post. It had started off normally enough with idle chatter, and come to think of it, I was starting to worry that they wouldn't hit it off at all. But then something happened, and they were talking about having an affair. (Curious how one thing leads to another...) And from then on out, it was just one sort of... giant extended joke.
Why the empty relationship, instead of a real one that is filled with ridiculous amounts of flirting? Well, the way I see it, I think both Percy and Byakuran are the types to... tease without really promising anything. Admittedly, they do it for different reasons, but outwardly, I think the results are the same. But hey! It's amusing to both parties, so why not? No harm done, no hearts broken.
So it's all fun and games, but things are getting a little blurrier now that some time has passed since their "relationship" started. I don't have any doubt in my mind that Percival does think well of Byakuran, as a friend and... possibly slightly more. You might be able to frame it in a romantic sense, but it's not the same sort of feeling that he has toward Chris. With Chris, I see Percy being willing to wait forever and a day for her. With Byakuran? I think he'd be more willing to let the uh... feelings slide should things go bad.
Which Percy is actually worried about! He knows that Byakuran is... not exactly the nicest, kindest, gentlest person out there, even if he's perfectly nice to him right now. People have told him about Byakuran's um... evil tendencies, and he can see traces of it himself in the other's words and actions. It's... kinda like playing with fire! It's so damn pretty when you're handling it properly, but when things go bad? It can get really bad. And well. RPG character or not, Percy isn't exactly going to willingly submit himself to um... the terrible things that Byakuran can do should the mood suit him. In a way, that kind of provides another reason to keep up the relationship, ruse or not.
And for the time being, Percival has absolutely no problem with that. He's happy with his interactions with Byakuran, even if he's a little confused internally about how he should be feeling. There's the issue of what his feelings for Byakuran are exactly as well as the gender thing. Percy enjoys the company of ladies back at home, and well, feminine charms and all, Byakuran is still a guy. You won't see Percy agonizing over this out loud, but well, I think he'd probably spend quite bit of time thinking about it by himself. Not in a "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING" sort of way, but more of in a self-exploratory fashion, seeing as he's not entirely sure he likes Byakuran that way anyway.
But hey! What happens at camp stays at camp. Unless Percival suddenly gets his fellow knights. Then it gets... complicated.
For instance, if Chris were to magically show up tomorrow, I think he'd actually have a bit of trouble about what to do next. Percy still harbors feelings for her, but then there's this... other thing with Byakuran. And well, getting out of the not!relationship/relationship with him would probably lead to mounds of trouble, not only for himself but for Chris as well.
It doesn't really help that Byakuran is the possessive type, who, haha, is already having trouble with Percy's... tendency to socialize? In a way that may seem to be flirting at times? IDK. In any case, for the time being, Percival would probably just stay with Byakuran if only to avoid any trouble that may arise if he leaves. Besides, there's no guarantee that Chris will return his feelings anyway. Though, her seeing him with a guy probably won't do much to help his chances once he returns home.
As mentioned before, though, Percival is currently perfectly fine with where he is at now in the current camp situation. The only potential problem I foresee is if he happens upon Byakuran calling him a "toy" or a "tool" or something else along those lines. (And haha, I will be doing my best to keep this from happening OOCly.) That would not sit well with him at all, and well, that'd probably cause him to ah... break things up, shall we say? As a knight, he has no problems working under the command of another, but he expects a certain amount of respect from the person giving the orders. Okay, so it's not quite a commanding officer/subordinate relationship here, but... It's a relationship all the same. Percy expects to be treated with respect, and that's that.
LONG STORY SHORT: Percival quite honestly doesn't know what to make of his relationship with Byakuran. Is it real? Is it still just one big joke? In any case, he's comfortable where he is now and doesn't have any plans to change the direction of where they're going, wherever that is. And if something should develop? Woo, great. If not, well, let's hope it ends on a good note.
But in the end? Things will come to some sort of closing when he goes home. He'll go back to trying to win the affections of Chris and spending time with his fanclub. The end.
I don't know if I managed to accomplish anything with that essay. SO MANY WORDS, BUT DOES ANY OF IT MAKE SENSE? D8 Ahhhh.
