The part I left out was that this woman was fucking condescending and self-righteous and the conversation was dripping with classist (racist) undertones. She kept saying "You know, I PAY for my daughter's lunches." As if she deserved some sort of medal or recognition from me that her kid isn't on the free-lunch program. She must have told me that she pays the WHOLE $1.85 fifty times. (Because the lunch program is on a sliding scale according to income) I wanted to grab her by the throat and tell her that I don't give a rats-ass how much money she has AND I resent the implication that my other students and their parents are less deserving of my attention on the phone because they don't work or can't afford to buy lunch.
Whats weird is this sounds like the kind of conversation I have with my tenants.
Yes you got a billing letter it was printed before you paid your rent. Yes I have your rent. No you do not have a balance. No you are not being filed in court yes I am sure I have your rent....
P E O P L E are strange...they really don't listen.
Do you think they just don't WANT to hear the answer or do you think THEY just want to be heard but don't know how to say what they mean?
I think this woman just wanted me to hear that she was frustrated that her daughter didn't get the lunch that the she ordered for her and clearly wanted her to have. BUT she made it about the $1.85 and so I addressed the $1.85 and I think she felt unheard.
That's one of the major things i'm working on right now. Trying to see past what seems to be the issue so i can try to find what is really affecting me and address it.
