I was in Canada for work and had a couple of days to do touristy things in the Rocky Mountains. This takes place at a hot spring.
All you’re meant to do at the hot spring is sit and soak. The rules are clearly posted on the wall, including the ones pertinent to the story: no splashing, and all children are to be within reach of a parent/guardian at all times.
One little boy, about seven, was splashing about and making noise. The attendant called for his parents to settle him down. No parents replied. The attendant called a second time. Again, no parents replied. The pool was tiny and, apart from the boy, nearly silent. Everyone heard the attendant. The attendant then told the boy directly to stop splashing and explained to him that the rules were that he had to be with an accompanying adult at all times. The boy was very god about it. He stopped splashing and went to his parents - who were several meters away, definitely not within reach. They had also not even glanced up to acknowledge the attendant when he’d called for the boy’s parents. There was no mistake about them being the ‘accompanying adults’, either. The kid climbed all over them both when he got to them.
Cut to about 10 minutes later. The attendant spotted a five year old girl quietly choking and sinking under the water. He yelled for someone to grab her and a man next to her pulled her out. (This all happened much faster than it would have been possible for the attendant to reach her himself.) As before, the parents of the girl were requested, and again, no parent spoke up. When questioned, the girl pointed out her parents - the same ones as of the seven year old boy earlier. This time, they were on the other side of the pool.
Her eldest brother (about 11) came over and took her back to her family. After that, possibly due to the evil eyes the attendants and other patrons were giving them, the father and eldest brother kept a closer eye on the younger ones.
The mother completely ignored everything. I’m sure everyone in the pool was thinking the same thing I was - “Woman, your kid nearly drowned, and you didn’t even move a facial muscle, let alone your ass.”
I know the pool is small and the water is hot, but if your kid can drown in the bath, she can certainly drown here.
