Reverse/Rebirth - Journal Entry
"A boy who was born and raised on a small group of islands.
Riku dreamt of seeing other worlds, and so he forsook the islands-only to be seduced by the power of darkness.
Enslaved by Ansem, pursuer of darkness, Riku clashed with his childhood friend Sora. But in the end, he was able to regain himself, and together with Sora closed the door to darkness. Still, the dark wounds in Riku's heart have yet to mend."
If you were to ask Riku what he thought of himself now, the answer would be that he doesn't consider himself too remarkable. He had, once upon a time, thought rather higher of himself, but those days are long past him. Riku now places his friends above all else, having an undying loyalty and dedication to them. Sora and Kairi are far more important in the grand scheme of things than he feels he is. And while thoughts like that would have angered him a year ago, he's far more comfortable with his place in the world now having matured with a greater understanding of both himself and the universe that they live in.
That doesn't mean that Riku will just roll over to let his best friends take care of everything. With his boundless loyalty comes a protective nature and an unwavering resolve. Riku had spent a whole year sticking to the shadows, doing whatever was necessary to help piece together his best friend's memory. Were he not to have that kind of determination and hope that what he was working towards was to help, Sora would have never awoken from his slumber. He'll do what is necessary and needs to be done to achieve the right end result, but that doesn't mean that he will simply take orders and be used as a doormat. The boy has been treated merely as a tool before and he has learned from those experiences. So while he may be willingly to cooperate on many matters, if he finds something that he feels is not right he will make it known and act on his own accord if need be, such as when he originally got the orders to terminate Namine. In addition to having a strong resolve, he's also quite self-sufficient, able to take care of himself and having very few qualms about working on his own. But he's still cooperative and now knows the value of teamwork and staying together, especially when it comes to his friends.
Riku wasn't always quite so understanding or mellowed out like he is now. To get this far and to become the young man he is today, he had to reinvent himself. No longer is he as competitive with Sora as he was before, nor as brash or as prone to anger and jealous fits as he once was. Many of these traits are subdued (such as his competitive nature) or just not nearly as prominent as they once were. It took understanding himself and overcoming his own fears and worries, and realizing that maybe some day he can be forgiven for his sins, but it's a goal he needs to work towards specifically, to quell some of the more negative personality traits he had. Although what he has been through was dangerous and traumatizing to him, over all, it helped shape him to be a better person.
A lot of his growth has made him take things a little more seriously than someone his age normally would. Riku still has the potential to act like a kid and goof off with his friends. Not nearly as much as he had before, since many of his activities included playful competitions with Sora, but usually in the form of a wise crack or particular comment directed at his friend's expense. He's also had a lot of curiousity on very 'big picture' topics that seems to have died down in his maturing phase as well but have attributed to his serious nature. Riku can still be curious; he's had a over a good year to refine his recon skills. But through his journey and adventure, he's come out not being so forward or direct about his questions concerning the worlds and how things need to be. He's far more content not to question things anymore.
