But will he find he can't handle it when it all turns sour?

So, I think I have discovered part of the reason I'm not getting anywhere with my songwriting: I'm not willing to share my song. That isn't saying that I don't want to get it into a form where I can start singing it and recording it and the like. The thing is, I have such a specific vision of what I want out of it that I'm very loathe to trust ( Read more... )

Let me know if you want any help. I've been doing this for a few years now and even if it's just "Hey here's the melody I hear and I can't figure out what chord goes with it." I can try and help.

Thanks, I might take you up on that. At the very least I might try to take you up on a former offer for lessons. (Giving you money would most likely be enough incentive for me to get off my ass and get the damn thing fixed. X.x)

If you try to explain to another songwriter how the song looks in your head, then you have the feedback and the opportunity to explain it properly. This is generally easier than getting it down clearly in a form that'll make sense to people just from listening to a few minutes of music. It's rather a good way to clarify for yourself exactly what the song is, which in turn should help you get it out in more concrete form. As a bonus, any competent songwriter looking with an outsider's view is fairly likely to point out if there's something in the song that's stopping it from working. Been there and done that, on both sides of the fence.

I may not be the best option even if you do decide you dare to share it, but I'm an option if you want me to be. Good luck :-)

So, you can't play an instrument, but you have a vision, know how you want your song to sound. You can travel up and down a piano and point out which notes you want, yes? I might have something for you my friend. If you're interested... ;)

Actually, it occurs to me that you probably sing a much prettier top C than I do. How familiar are you with Allegri's Miserere?

i can't bring my guitar to Con, or i'd offer to try jamming out with you there.

maybe the house will have a surprise piano?

i have a decent background in music theory and would be glad to try and help you hammer things out; no pressure, no facist imposition of other ideas on your brain juice, etc. etc.

i just sat at our piano a few nights ago and figured out the "right" chords for my dad to be able to play "crazy" by patsy cline on the guitar. (yes, there are already plenty of guitar tabs, but he swore up and down that none of them were right and i had to start with an A chord and a simple transposition from a "wrong" tab just wouldn't do). long story short, it made me remember my love of plunking away to get to where i need to be, and made me want to do more musical stuff again. so yeah. ~jazz hands~
