Backwash

May 29, 2007 07:21

It looks to me like backwash.com, where I have written some "articles", is going down for the count. At some as-yet-unspecified future date, to be sure -- but the decay seems more than just progressive at this point. It'll be sad if it gets nuked, because there is a lot of clever content buried in there -- especially on old messageboard threads. I ( Read more... )

There are many kinds of politics, my friend. ;-)

But you can certainly listen to that, while you read my screed, if ya like.

That's sad about BW...
It kinda intimidated me after awhile with how complex it got...just too much...I kept saying I'd go back and write more, but never got to it...I'd go back and read a column or 3, but just couldn't stick around like I could when it was simpler...

Yeah, it is sad. But I'm not gonna blame ringy for ceasing to dump an infinite amount of money down a rathole. And the site never did accomplish its main goal -- getting reader interaction -- ever.

The complexity didn't bug me too much, but I've also never been accused of being a prolific, creative writer. Of course, a lot of my messageboard comments could have been construed to be columns, too. Ha!

It's hard to say much about the collapse of backwash cause I really do try to not say negative things and sound mean.

The easiest way to put my view is that if I go to a party and I don't want to hang around anybody there, then it's best to go find another one. It's not nessessarily the fault of the people for not being interesting to me, it's my problem and that's my solution.

I keep typing thoughts on BW in this comment box and then I delete them. I could probably write a whole disertation on what I think has hurt the site, and what led me to believe it was going to die out well over a year ago, but it can't do any good anyway.

Maybe I'll post that privately or I'll e-mail you.

One important thing I have to say though, David deserves a lot of credit for his vision and I hope he doesn't completely give up on his web projects. I don't think the site's shortcomings have that much to with him at all.

I agree with you to a large extent, and I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts. The thing was, BW was not intended to be just a party among the columnists. I never was sure what it would take to actually get a community of readers to interact with me, or with us -- but if it had actually happened, I think that would have been far more interesting than interacting with most of the set of columnists we ended up having. Of course, one thought was: interacting with each other would encourage interaction from outside -- but that scheme (and all others) failed for some reason. Seems like a marketing problem to me, and therefore far beyond my milieu. In some sense, I'd have to disagree, and say that one critical failure WAS ringy's problem -- once we knew the basic premise of the site wasn't working, it was his (and only his) responsibility to find a fix, axe the site as a failure, or sell it quick to someone who *could* figure out the answer ( ... )
