Nice look at what may have been going on with the girls and Alma and that fateful time she put the note in the tackle box. Well, wives always know don't they? Joe

Thanks, Joe. The words in the note have often struck me as being too simple for an adult to have written. I agree that the wives probably always knew-it was just a matter of how much they admitted to themselves.

usually I couldn't muster much sympathy for the wives, even though I know they were the innocent victims. It's just that J&E's tragedy has occupied all my heart. But that scene you described Alma sitting alone in the dark with sheets of paper and a pen, then her kid asking innocent question - that's tough. :(

Thank you.

Sure enough, Jack & Ennis have always been the main focus for me, too. However, I have sometimes felt drawn to the girls’ point of view (even though I have no experience with being a child of divorced parents). Perhaps it’s the idea of being in the position of trying to balance love for both parents with realizing that they’re better off separately and, at any rate, there’s nothing the girls could do to change things. Sadness all around.

Another wonderfully written chapter - children are always so much more aware than adults give them credit for. I loved how you worked the note into the flashback. A heartbreaking situation at every turn - and we usually don't get to peek around this corner. Thanks again, Marie

Everyone’s affected by the larger love story, and -yes- I agree that kids are aware of more than their parents suspect.

You’re such a sweetheart. Thanks.

You get so much across in a short span of words. I'd never thought about the tone of the note sounding too simple for an adult to have written. I'm so glad you noticed that, and that it led to these wonderful scenes.
And more poetry - "a block of light shone into the living room" - an image that works on multiple levels.
Thank you.

Poor Girls - maybe bringing up the memories will help them in the end to understand their father better. bob

Thank you, bob. The memories might raise as many questions as answers, but the girls will help each other through this.
