Yunho stared at wall clock in front of him. 11:24 and 30 seconds, 11:24 and 31 seconds, 11:24 and 32 seconds, 11:24 and 33 seconds.

He had already forgotten what time he started counting each tick of the clock. The station was practically empty now as he sat all by himself, clutching onto his phone, as if willing it to finally ring.

He whispered a curse to himself, closing his eyes as he still counted the seconds, listening to the faint sound of the moving clock hand. It was so quiet…and lonely.

What the hell am I doing here? He’d asked it over countless times that night.

Jung Yunho had only 3 regrets in his life. Denying him. Leaving him. And missing the earlier train to the station he was now moping in.

He didn’t have much regrets, or mistakes, for that matter. It was because he knew what he wanted, life seemed to be a series of stages to get his goals, it was as simple as that.

He was sure he was going to be a lawyer, he was sure he’d get married and have a family, he was sure, along the way he’d buy a big blue house with a picket fence and a beautiful garden to please his wife. He’d win almost all his cases and he’d drive a red Ferrari to work. He’d be showy and accomplished in his youth, travelling and drinking out in classy bars with his colleagues.  And he would retire with no much issues. He’d then spend the rest of his life watching the news and eventually looking back on the old news paper clippings of him and his famous cases. He was sure his life was going to turn out that way.

He was sure, so sure.

He had been so sure.

…Until, like a pebble dropping on a still pond, he came along, causing ripples in his otherwise stagnant and clear life.

It all started when he was in his second year of law school. He’d gone on an art gallery for incentive points for a rather eccentric psychology professor. With a small notebook and the expensive fountain pen he got from his grandfather, he went from one work to another, listing down his feelings, just as his professor instructed.

It was an exhibit of various pieces from different artists. Yunho had forgotten the theme of exhibit, or the names of the select individuals who had their works on display. He vaguely remembered a lot of black and white paintings and random ink blotches on canvases.

Yunho never really understood art nor was he ever interested. None of them was ever memorable except for one, a rather abstract painting of what Yunho made out as the ocean. It was blue gradating to lime green, and white waves in form of broken swirls filled the image. It was called Blue Sunrise.

It was a somewhat happy piece, light and quirky, Yunho thought, but for the other person whom he'd seen standing right in front of it…it had most probably looked sad, really sad because the other was sobbing, wiping his nose against the sleeve of a pink cardigan.

Yunho couldn’t understand why or how something like that could evoke such emotion. He didn’t even know what happened or what lead him, to the pale blonde who was standing, hugging oneself and weeping in front of the picture.

He opened and closed his mouth a few times…he wanted to speak to him, and yet he didn’t either. He didn’t know what to do, let alone what to feel. Sympathy? Curiosity? Apprehension?

There was only the two of them in the gallery at that time and Yunho wished someone was there with him. He felt some sort of responsibility over the crying individual.

He had taken an unintentionally loud gulp, causing the other to turn to him. It had taken Yunho a few seconds to register that he was staring at another man. He was a beautiful, despite the red nose and puffy eyes filled to the brim with tears. He sniffled with his pouty lips and stared right back into Yunho’s concerned but confused eyes. His face reminded Yunho of a combination of a lost rabbit and a toddler that had cried hours for milk.

He heard a loud cry as the other’s weeps grew stronger, seemingly triggered by his presence. Yunho didn’t know if he’d send any signal for the other to lunge into his arms, but he did, so suddenly that they could have fallen to the ground if Yunho had been a little less stable with his footing.  His notebook and his pen fell on the floor. He was a little taken a back, but as he felt the other’s shoulders shudder against him, he slowly wrapped his arms around the him, calmly rubbing his back, hoping it would sooth him, even just a little bit.

He could feel his shirt getting wet with tears…and snot, judging from the snorts against his sleeve, but he didn’t have the heart to pull away.

It was the oddest encounter Yunho has ever had with a stranger.

The law student didn’t know how long he held the other man but, eventually the sobs had subsided and turned into quiet sniffles. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry” he could barely hear the other mumble against him. “Please don’t get freaked out. I’m sorry.”

The other man leaned himself closer to Yunho, pulling himself up and cradling his head to the joint of Yunho’s neck and shoulder. “Don’t let go, not yet,” he heard him again.

“Don’t, okay?” arms snaked around Yunho’s neck, pulling him tightly, making it a little bit hard to breathe. “Okay?” he held tighter.

“Okay. Okay, I’ll stay” Yunho finally whispered back and the other loosened his hold.

Yunho closed his eyes, suddenly feeling some sense of obligation to the crying man in his arms.

“Thank you,” another muffled whisper and Yunho held him a little tighter, moving his hands again to sooth his still heaving back.

When Yunho went back to his room that night, he cried out a string of curses as he realized that he would have to go back to the gallery again. He’d forgotten to pick up his pen and pencil after the rather awkward goodbye with the sobbing man.

The next day he went to the gallery’s concierge, asking for his lost things. While waiting for the receptionist to look through the lost and found his eyes idled to the exhibit hall, eventually finding the strange ocean painting again. His eyes widened when he saw the blonde again. He was not crying anymore, but he still had a stoic face, this time sitting on the floor, cross legged, staring at that one painting.

“Sir, here’s the notebook and pen you were looking for”

“Sir.”

“Sir”

It had taken a few more words to finally get Yunho’s attention, but immediately after the receptionist had returned what he came for he immediately left. He had failed a quiz on family law that day, the blonde plaguing his mind.

The next day again, however, he found himself in the same gallery. Yunho wanted to make sure he took got a record of all the paintings, or so he said to himself. And again, the man was there. That time, the other had caught his eyes staring at him, he smiled and Yunho found himself in a café with an espresso, listening and staring at deep doe eyes that were full of intrigue and charm.

On that day too, Yunho learned his name.

Jaejoong.
