My case, our case was in good hands. I knew that when it came to the law, Lilah Morgan was the best. The fact that she might not play it entirely fair had occurred to me, but when it came to the girls, I didn't really care. Lilah wouldn't use foul play in such a way it would risk the case. I was almost certain of that. For not there was nothing much I could do then wait for her to get back to me with news of when and what and...so on. Still, I couldn't help but feeling nervous and wonder just when exactly those girls had become so important to me. Sneaky little bugger zoomed in right under my radar.
When I neared my office, I noticed the door was open and Jennifer has situated herself behind my desk. Good girl, she could keep a much better eye on the girls there, and on her desk. I think I'll miss her when I leave, she is very good at her job and... Well, she's good. Unlike a lot of people here who are not good. Then again, no one is entirely good, as I'm well aware.
As I walked in I was greeted by Alicia sitting on her knees behind the coffee table and apparently doing her homework. And Marilee had fallen asleep on the sofa. Poor little one, it must've been an exhausting day for her. I was about to grab my jacket and put it over her, when she opened her eyes.
"Wesley!" She jumped up from the sofa and then right into my arms. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, she looked at me with a smile, which made my smile right back. Good lord, when did I become such a sap? "Miss Jennifer said I could do lotsa fhings but I was tiwed and then I went to sleep and we had some soda and chocolate milk and Alicia needed to do her homewowk but she don't wanna but then Miss Jennifer said you'd be disappointed and--"
"Marilee, love," I said amused as she rambled on, taking in some gulps of air now and then. "Breathe." Letting out a small laugh at her sheepish look I glanced over at Alicia who looked at me with mix between a scowl and a look which said 'I've been a good girl right?'.
"I did done my math and my history, see?" Alicia said, holding up some papers, which had the most unrecognizable chicken scrawl on it. I frowned at that. From what I remember during my tenure at Sunnydale, seven year olds are not supposed to be doing history and math that looked this complicated. I knew what my childhood had been like, they weren't going to have the same. I think I need to talk about this school of theirs, maybe find them a better one. This one reminded me far too much of the boarding schools I've went to. Minus the boarding then.
She kept looking at me nervously, holding up her papers. "Very good, Sweetheart," I told her, flashing her a smile as I walked to my desk. When she beamed at me, I was slightly taken aback. Probably more from the fact that she looked relieved at my words. That settles it, I'm going to have to look for a different school. And I have no idea how to do that. God. "Why don't you go do something for yourself now, Alicia. You can't spend all afternoon on your homework."
Nodding my thanks at Jennifer as she slid from behind her desk and walked back to her own, I sat down and put Marilee on my lap. "Who awe you cwalling?" She wanted to know as I reached for the phone.
"An old...err...co-worker of mine." Where in the bloody blazed did I put his phone number? Shuffling through the ungodly amount of papers on my desk, I frowned as I tried to remember where I'd put it. Alicia had moved over to my desk as well and was fiddling with one of my many pens.
"Whatcha lookin' for?" she wanted to know.
"Number," Marilee muttered.
Pausing, I blinked at her surprised. "How did you know that?" I wanted to know. She just shrugged and gave me that tiny smile again.
"Maybe its in your rollothingy," Alicia said, pointing at my Rolodex.
"Oh...yes. Thank you." Why did I not think of that? Shaking my head at myself, I picked up the rolodex and looked through until I found Rupert Giles' number. Of course, where else would it be?
"I can be like you secretary!" Alicia nodded when she noticed I found the number.
Pulling the phone closer, I raised my eyebrow at her and gave her an amused look. "You're certainly doing a good job now," I told her, squinting at the number. Right. Calling Mister Giles now. I took a few calming breaths, then dialed the number and waited for the other man to pick up. Christ, why was I so nervous?
[Open for Giles]
