The Marine base is doing fireworks for the 4th of July, as they have every
year I've been here.

Now I'm wondering, though: Do all the military bases around the world do the
same? Because it seems like it might be just a little smug if the military
bases in England do.

They probably do, there's one "quite near" me (about half an hours drive XD), i'd go and look if i could be bothered.

We had yanks living next to us a few years ago and they all walked out the back of the house bewildered when the 5th of November came around. (Well actually it was the 1st of November as fireworks go on for most of the surrounding week)

D'aaaw, and it's got itself such a catchy poem associated with it and everything. ^^;

You'd think people would make an effort to learn about the festivals and celebrations of the place they lived.

...then again, I learned about small children pelting their fathers with beans and it made me wonder if Japan was well and truly mad.

What can I say? Smug Americans are on my mind a lot.

(Observed two such people tonight getting all pissy at the Mcdonald's worker because he was calling for the 「2番を持っての客様」instead of "Number 2!")
