I know this may sound weird, but have you tried self-hypnosis? I had the same exact problem as you do, and hypnosis really helped me. It isn't like what you see on tv, with the guy or gal in this deep, trancelike state (doing stuff they would never do if they weren't hypnotized ;) ), and there is absolutely no religious aspect to it whatsoever. It is very relaxing, and helps to calm both your mind and your body. Once you get used to being so relaxed, you can actually slip from a hypnotized state into a pretty deep sleep very easily.
You can probably find a couple books about self-hypnosis at a library. Hope that helps!
