Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars-points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.

"Yeah, the whole thing was written by my hopeful alter ego. I'm a person who's definitely inclined toward occasional dark hours. Being that kind of person, I always used music as...my balance. The notated version of Valium or something. It's the thing that chills me out and brings me back to level. With this record especially, the whole process was in constant turmoil. On top of that, I was writing about a period of time in my life that was probably one of the more difficult periods. In that sense, I had to use the record as an excuse to say 'Well, it'll be fun. Just c'mon.' It definitely was hope in a different sort of way. I feel like I was more real about how hopeless things could feel, too. The idea was that, for all the hopelessness in some of the tunes, there really is this tinge of. 'Well, okay, this will be survived at some point, don't stress."

"You know what? Fuck beauty contests. Life is one fucking beauty contest after another. School, then college, then work... Fuck that. And fuck the Air Force Academy. If I want to fly, I'll find a way to fly. You do what you love, and fuck the rest."

"Then you haven't been hugged properly. It's an emotional Heimlich. Someone puts their arms around you, gives a squeeze. All your fear and anxiety comes shooting out of your mouth in a big, wet wad and you can breathe again."

"This song was written about something really close to my heart. You know sometimes, life brings on it's complications, it's hard, hardships. but you know, it's how we deal with em that counts. And I know that each and every single one of you in this audience tonight have been through a hard time before, right? And I know each and every one of you have felt at one point like you couldn't go on. But then you found hope. There's always somewhere to find hope, remember that. there was a time in my life, where I got diagnosed with diabetes and thought "Man, I'm not gonna be able to live my dream. I'm not gonna be able to do what I wanna do." That was 3 years ago. And today, I can say that I played for 12,000 people in Chicago 'cause I found hope. How many people in this audience tonight need to find hope? how many of you need to find a friend? How many of you need to feel some peace? Well I can say that's what this song is about. But tonight this song, this song is for you."
