Every Morning the Clouds Part

Tora was jarred awake by the shifting of sheets around him and the rise-dip of the bed so close to his left; he thought he was falling. Keeping his breathing even and his eyes cracked slightly open, Tora watched Hiroto slip quickly from his side and half run, half trip his way towards the bathroom.

He buried his face into a pillow, muffling a snort when Hiroto finally fell over a large pair of boots. The ground was littered haphazardly; obstacles thrown off in a rush the night before. Mumbling curses, he crawled the rest of the way to the bathroom, eyes still squinted shut against the glaring morning light, mind mostly muddled and asleep.

The room was still again. Outside, not a single bird chirped to welcome the new day. No breeze ruffled curtains through a just open window. Motionless air, wet and heavy, seeped up into Tora’s nostrils as he lay there waiting for Hiroto to return, but the rush of water through plumbing and its pitter pattering on tiled floor lulled Tora back into a hazy sleep.

The unfolded minutes seemed like seconds before wet hair was burrowing its way closer to Tora. He turned over on his side to watch Hiroto snuggle closer, leaving streaks of dark wet on the bedding. His eyes were still shut, steadily working their way towards sleep when a familiar hand reached up to stroke his cheek. Shuddering lightly, Hiroto let himself sinker deeper into the comfortable warmth on his cheek, under the sheets, all around him.

Tora lay facing Hiroto for a while, just watching him sleep, letting the rare, silent morning work its magic around him. His cheek was cool to the touch, water evaporating in the air, and Tora wished for a second that Hiroto took more care drying himself off in the mornings. He just wants to be the first one up, Tora thought smiling to himself.

He let his hand trail down the other’s face, caressing the skin before it slowly slid the blanket back, pulling until it rested just above the soft angle of Hiroto’s hip. A hand began tracing the lines of his chest, eyes memorizing each curve, skin taking in sight. Tora was softly thumbing circles around the younger man’s belly button before a hand came down and slapped his fingers away.

“Stop it, you’ll give me a woody.”

Laughing audibly this time, Tora reached his arms around to pull Hiroto closer into the crook of his neck, quieting his drowsy mumbles. They stayed that way for a while; warm bodies pressed comfortably together, skin against skin unhindered by any clothes while they listened to the approaching rumbles outside their apartment.

“Why do you always have to wake up first?”

It was a playful question, something he wondered aloud as he pulled Hiroto to lay atop his chest. Wriggling higher up to let his head rest on pillow just above Tora’s left shoulder, Hiroto allowed himself to relax bonelessly onto the other’s body. The thumping of Tora's heart beat in time with the falling rain. Hiroto fought the urge to drift sleep again, tucking a few strands of Tora’s hair behind his ear before slowly whispering his answer.

“To make sure it's not a dream.”

He pulled himself up, hands splayed across chest to look Tora in the eyes.

“To make sure you’re still here, I’m still here, that we’re both still here.”

Tora looked up at the serious intensity in Hiroto’s eyes and tightened his grip on Hiroto’s seated hips. He wanted him to feel the sincerity of his love, of everything he ever did. Gently, he pulled Hiroto forward into a kiss, losing himself in the hands that came up to cup his cheek, the sweet velvet in his mouth.

Pulling only centimeters apart to let their foreheads touch and their breaths return, the look in Hiroto’s eyes almost made Tora choke on his words.

“I’ll always be here Pon,” his voice cracked anyways, on words filled with so much emotion, “and if this really is a dream, if none of this is real and you’ve only been sleeping, when you wake up I’ll still be there for waiting for you. Lying right next to you.”

For a long moment they drowned in each other's eyes, teared up, unwilling to look away. The rain pelted quiet rhythms outside, the low keels of thunder not strong enough to shatter the calm and safety inside their home, beneath the covers.

“Thank you.”
