There's a specific trick that TARDISes can do, if they're configured just right and if someone competent is at the controls. It plays on a lot of odd physics and the trans-dimensional conduit, controlling coordinates and sequences of materialisation in order to materialise physically around someone, jogging them back through the conduit to appear in the extradimensional interior. The Doctor should know this trick himself - it's how he got to Rose while she stood on the middle of the Dalek bridge.
Of course, his mind is probably not on that as the TARDIS materialises around him, jogging him back to the cricket pitch with a psychic glomp. The false sunlight pouring in through the translucent ceiling, casting mosaic patterns on the grass, is tinted a special shade of Yay! just for him.
