Suddenly he is just thereEvery day, every second. He follows her to work, talking at her, whispering to her. She wants to scream back at him, but it's obvious that she's the only one who can see it, so she ignores him. The more she ignores him, the harder it is to make him go away. He sits there, on the edges of her mind and by the end of the week, she's tried to repress him for so long that he's stronger than he is ( ... )

"It seems to be the case," she says softly, leaning back against the wall again and looking over Damon's shoulder at the image of her father again. She doesn't want to talk about it, and she isn't sure that Damon would understand, but if he's seeing things too, maybe they can mutually pretend that this didn't happen. "I'm seeing my father."

Damon slumps against the wall opposite of her for the moment at least. He has been drinking a lot in an attempt to drown out the hallucinations. Funnily enough, it hasn't worked at all. So now he's drunk and hallucinating, it's the best combination.

"Daddy issues." Damon, that's not even the half of hat and he can tell by the state that she was in when he stumbled on her but that doesn't mean he'll acknowledge he can tell or acknowledge that... he cares.

Slight pause. "I'm seeing my...self but not," he says and he glances over at the Elena and !Damon in the corner of the room and rolls his eyes at them both. He is all for ignoring it's happening right now. "...you want a drink?"

Yeah, Damon this is brilliant coping mechanisms. Way to help by not helping at all.

"You have no idea," she says softly in response to him pinning down her issues so easily, and ignores the question regarding the drink. She's still trying to figure out what it is that's doing this to them, other than the rift.

"Why is it doing this? What is it trying to make us see?"

She has daddy issues. He has self...issues. It's more complicated than that on both their ends, and in the end, the issue lies within themselves whether they're hallucinating other people or not. It's not Elena's fault that he continues to try to be someone he's not whether she had the expectation and belief in him or not.

"No idea," Damon says heavily, taking a long drink from the flask in his hand. "I thought the Rift did this kind of thing for a good time. I know I'm having a blast."

"The Rift never does what it's expected to," she sighs as she leans back again. "I know I certainly never expected this."

The vision of her father is still taunting her across the room, sitting in the chair with the newspaper in his hand. He's watching the two of them over the edge of his paper, almost as though he is waiting to see what will happen.

"I take it then, you don't know how to stop it."

"Are you kidding? I've been... waiting for this since the day I arrived," Damon says almost lazily but definitely sarcastically. "Who can't envision a hallucination of everything they try not to think about on the day-to-day coming to haunt them when they least expect it?"

He rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

Damon's drinking from that flask again.

"No clue. If I did you could bet I'd be doing that."

She sighs softly, just closing her eyes and trying to block everything else out, but having her father present in the room with her has a way of keeping him in the forefront of her mind. After a moment, she opens them again, and he's not any less there.

"This is a bloody nightmare."

Damon rolls his eyes as he leans his head back against the wall and looks down at her.

"You can say that again," he says. "So lets say that the Rift is doing this for a reason. What reason would there be to make us... hallucinate this?"

She's quiet for a moment, actually thinking about this. It's giving her brain something to think about which is helpful for the moment. Imagine that, Damon. You're being helpful.

"You said you're seeing yourself ... but not." She pauses for a moment. "How isn't it you?"

Damon makes a face at the question. There's a reason he's not facing it, and it's because he really doesn't want to. Damon would be pleasantly surprised that he's being helpful at the same time as he was like Pff, I'm always helpful and awesome.

"It's someone... that a friend wants me to be but I'm not because I'm not... nice." Grimace at the very thought. He takes a long drink from the flask. "I'm not good."

"Nice is overrated," she sighs. "People always expect everyone to just be nice to them, but sometimes people just don't deserve it."

It's probably not relevant to his particular issue, but she likes to think she has a point.
