ℂ 002 ] [ out for cake

Today is Caroline's eighteenth birthday. If anyone had ever told her that she'd be turning a year older in an alternate Chicago, she would've thought they were crazy. This time last year things had been so different, but they just seem to continue changing. Which is why, for tonight, Caroline is seeking out a tiny bit of normal ( Read more... )

Castiel has never been invited to a birthday celebration before.

He attended Veronica's party that was thrown for her, but this seems to be a much smaller and more intimate setting. He is touched that Caroline thought to consider him, but he has no criteria as to know what would be deemed acceptable for the situation.

He asked Libby. Libby handed him a cupcake and told him it was meant to be a gift.

It all seems simple enough.

At exactly the time he was told to be there, Castiel appears in the middle of the restaurant, looking around the room for a sign of the blond, before making his way over and handing her the cupcake. "I was told it was customary to bring a gift."

Caroline realizes relatively quickly that she doesn't have many friends here in Chicago. There's no high school for her to attend to bolster her social group, no cheerleading to take part in so that she can have a small gaggle of girls around her.

There's no Bonnie. No Tyler.

It's jarring, but she's trying to adjust. She's made new friends, just not the usual dozens. Castiel is one of them and as he awkwardly hands her a cupcake she smiles up at him.

"It's perfect. I appreciate it and I'm glad you came."

"You're welcome," he says with a nod. "Thank you for inviting me."

"I don't have many people to invite," Caroline admits openly. "I'm just glad the few people I could ask - actually showed up."

Castiel frowns. "Why would they not come?"

"If they were busy? I don't know, it's a big city, Castiel. There are people that have real jobs and probably important things to do."

"Oh. I did not take that into account." Castiel doesn't have things like jobs and important things to do. He just bounces around and manages to work everything out.

"Back home I always had to take everything into account. Every detail."

"I have never had a job. Or ... many plans. Angels are not social creatures by nature." At least not in the human terms of social.

"This was more of a... school thing," Caroline replies. "I was on a lot of committees."

"Committees for what?" he asks with a frown. From what he understood, school was for learning things. He is unclear on where committees come into play. He also hasn't hung out with a lot of teenagers, so this is a relatively new world view.

"Mostly for student events. A carnival, dances, anything that required choices to be made."

"I see," he replies, and he actually does this time. Sort of. "Like training for some kind of leadership position."

Caroline laughs a bit, "Not exactly. It's more like extra things to put on your college admissions paperwork. It's your way of saying - 'See how well I manage my time? I had an A average and I organized prom.' You should give me a scholarship."

"I do not know much about human school systems," he admits. "Most of the humans I have had contact with were above that age."

"Oh. Well, do you want to know about them?" Caroline asks. If anyone is capable of talking about it, she's probably ranked pretty high.
