Desmond Descant has been in and out of varying states of despair, anger, frustration, and a small number of other emotions he can't rightly put a name to. It's one of those problems with being overly emotional... Of never being able to hide a damned thing, because the emotions in your eyes give it away. Sometimes you just have to hide until the emotional storm in your head calms down.
He abandoned the suicide-watch rooms in favor of his own room some time ago- mostly because Martha and the Doctor had gone off to do their own things, which has led to a lot of... Not seeing each other. Not that Des would have been able to look at either of them before this point without remembering what happened and having to bite back an urge to scream. He's fairly certain he's mostly over that now and he knows he needs to see them. He doesn't care if they have absolutely nothing to say to each other- if all he can get them to do is just sit in the common room with him in total silence, it would be something.
Whether he likes it or not, Desmond Descant is more of a people person than he realizes. Sometimes he needs people, and, conversely, sometimes people need him. He's not sure if it's more the former than the latter right now or not, so he's just making himself available here in the common room- a nonverbal sign that he's not hiding anymore if the Doctor and Martha are willing to find him.
