Code Talk: Three-for-one GMing Post

Aug 13, 2013 22:35

This is only partially code talk; it's also policy talk, and pep talk. We have three topics to cover: players as scene runners/GMs, the Battle Fantasia Origin Story Round Robin, and the Battle Fantasia Youma Repository System. All of these are related to each other.

It's a rolling jubilee... )

would it be possible to do like 'quickie youma form' either through a 'random' option or through preset 'generic' youmas? I am guessing anybody can pick up any youma that is created but those might be rather specific relatively.

Yes! At launch there will be a set of generic youma, and in general we encourage people to not make their youma /too/ wildly specific, if they'd like their contributions used by others. Free attacks, of course, help generalize any form.

The origin round-robin thing sounds good, although it potentially hobbles somebody who goes for a really obscure theme.

As for the Youma Repository System, I like. :) Are there cookies or something for people who spend significant time just rolling up monsters for other people to use, or is there a limit on how many MOTWs the repository can hold conveniently?

Keep in mind part of Advancement, at least as described in an earlier post, involves votes and agreements and so forth instead of just 'you get xp (which is handed out by other players.) you get to advance'. So doing GM stuff WOULD be like 'getting cookies' since your'e active, you get to be a Known Person to the playerbase and the reward other than basically being acknowledged as Awesome is you're more likely to get shiny things for your character when it's their turn.

Edit: What about those of us that want to help but either don't know that much of the material, or don't feel comfortable doing Large scenes (You know the thirty person eight hour jobs that seem to crop up for prominent events) since not everyone (specifically me) can devote a day more or less to a single set of combat.

In the meantime this video sums it up for anyone wanting to be on monster duty:

I believe Mr. Singleton is referring to the idea, in the advancement post, that one requirement to increase in Master Rank is plot justification, but that it isn't a plot you can run yourself; people who GM a lot for other people are more likely to find people interesting in GMing theirs in turn, and the staff intends to prioritize running for people who run a lot of scenes if they can't find anyone to run for them. (Though everyone will get staff help eventually, if they really need it! In an ideal universe with lots of active GMs, this issue won't come up very often ( ... )

what of scenes that dont really have a 'gm'? like a social or a 'two characters hang out and talk about something'. that's still contributing--in some ways that's as much if not more of the lifeblood than 'suddenly a demon'. Does that qualify? or a 'hey everybody beach party at the beach' for that matter.

also re: the round robin, will there be something for bad guys to do day 1 besides gming? I guess being a demon who goes nyo ho horon at someone could be great on its own to set em off, but we could also do a start of darkness type deal. I presume that icly speaking, everyone isn't magical girling up on the same day even if oocly they are.

Just to be clear I love this idea since it takes pressure off staff on a very new mush so they can go around putting out probable fires when it comes to tweaking combat balance, code errors, and in general the headachs of any new project coming up.

It's a real good idea, hardcode in ways for letting anyone do Monster/Minion stuff. I know FK does that with it's heartless objects but this seems to be less 'puppeted object' and more 'player armor' which means the database isn't going to get cluttered with a bunch of one-time use things that'll need to get cleaned up.

Plus it allows players to have their own specific roster of low level critters they can throw out if they're playing villains. Have a trademark minion type? Boom. +youma. Want to explore a theme such as a series of constellation themed Youma but can't get players to app your minon/generals? Youma it until you can.

Granted setup is going to be a headach til everyone figures out what works and what doesn't but it's a nice looking tool I'm glad got included.

I need to ask this.

Supposing you are running a scene with a particular theme, canon or original, doesn't matter... Can you use the Youma form to generate mooks and Monsters of the Week from that theme? I'm pretty certain I know the answer already, but I wanna make sure.

Exactly! That's the very purpose of the Youma system. :) You use the commands to create a youma form, which you then copy, using +youma/summon, into your character's youma henshin slot. Type +transform Y (for comparison, +transform 1 transforms you into your 1st henshin form, +transform 2, etc, while +transform B is for going into Base Mode), and voila! You've become that youma, for the purposes of the combat system.
