Questions for a Friend

Ladies, can any of you offer advice or insight?  I've done my best, but extra eyes and voices are always appreciated.

My best friend had her daughter last week Monday, by C-Section.  I've been trying to check in with her regularly to offer some support regarding nursing.  I sent her a note today offering to answer any questions she may have.  ( Read more... )

Pumping the right side *may* help her heal, and some LCs would recommend some of that (at least, maybe alternating feedings/pumpings)... BUT I would absolutely tell her she needs to see someone in person to help her with latch. Maybe a hospital LC if she had one there, or LLL Leader, or private LC (sometimes insurance will cover a postpartum visit, esp. if there is a problem).

She's right, the tip shouldn't be involved really at all (it should be back further in the mouth) so that makes me think that she's got a 'working' latch but not a 'good' one, and that she will a) likely continue to have trouble with pain/damage as she continues on and b) perhaps see some slow gaining since her baby is not nursing as efficiently as possible. Unfortunately latch is a terrible thing to try to help with over email. :)

Otherwise I like everything you told her. Maybe help her find someone to talk to in her area?

Also remind her to switch positions to see if that is more comfortable for her. When I had a c/s the only comfortable position for me was the football hold. If she is trying to avoid the baby laying on her incision, she may not be able to get a deep enough latch. But I agree with Marisa to have her see an LC if she can.

As pp said, it sounds to me like she has a not so great latch and should have it checked. If she has a "nipple feeder", it is relatively easy to fix with careful watch over the latch.

Also, for bad nipple pain, she might want to try soothie breast pads. They are $$ and not really reusable, but you can put them in the fridge for a little extra coolness and relief.

Best of luck to your friend.
