Some info on the book: A Grief Observed is of course written by C.S. Lewis. It is the compilation of his personal journals written soon after his wife died. Her name was Helen more commonly known as Joy Gresham (first name Helen) who was also a writer, and he refers to her in the book as "H."
This journal was never meant to be published; as he tells within the journals, he wrote them to help console himself and to keep from going insane: they were written on mostly empty notebooks lying about the house. He was convinced to publish them by a friend a few years later. However, (this is key) he was so modest and their content so dear: he published them under a psuedonym, a very recognizably false name, N.W. Clerk.
little tidbit: The name was used in Old English as a shorthand in publishing works with unknown authors. "I know not what scholar."
