Was rather stunned this weekend to hear of the sudden death of Octavia Butler. I had a mini "Night Stalker" marathon with the DVD set I got for Christmas last night, as a little tribute. I loved that show growing up as well; it was really my first horror genre experience, such as it was.

It is so sad when someone you admire so much passes on. I agree completely with your post. Added to that, I was also saddened this weekend when I learned that Don Knotts passed away. My father literally raised me on The Andy Griffith Show (and Beverly Hillbillies, Happy Days, Little House on the Prairie....) and I'm only 29, but I will so miss his quirky, self-deprecating little spirit! Sigh. And there's such crap on tv for kids these days (Spongebob? What am I letting my kids watch????) There are so many ways that people we never meet touch our lives, through their humor, their spirit, their integrity.... They will be missed.

The shot out to Darren McGavin is well deserved. He hasn't gotten nearly enough recognition this week, not with the deaths of Don Knotts and Dennis Weaver getting all the attention. Kolchak ruled!

My favorite by Butler is Wild Seed. Her two main characters are so riveting that all the others characters seem unecessary. She was such an original, inventive writer.
