The song that Alan-a-Dale sings at the beginning of Robin Hood is a song called "Whistle Stop" and it was written by Roger Miller, The voice of Alan-a-Dale. In 1973. He also wrote "King of the Road" a great song that was much better know for its commercial appearances.
Now...it is obvious to me that Roger Miller was inspired by country folk music but it is not Cotton-Eyed Joe.
All this is interesting but should not overshawdow the salient point that the Hamster Dance Is a modern work of art and needs to be beamed into the cosmos through out SETI devices as proof to the universe that life here is pretty darn worth it. Now excuse me...I have to go and dance to the audio file you linked to and burn it onto my mp3 player.
Interesting. I confess that despite my undying love for Hamster Dance, I'd never really looked into it. My previous statement was based on melodic similarity, a certain amount of online discussion that seemed to treat this connection as common knowledge, and finally a redaction of Hamster Dance that came out a few years ago that incorporated hamster voices singing Cotton-Eyed Joe interspersed with the original clip from Robin Hood.
However, I never really checked my assumptions, and having now confirmed through the oracle of Google that you are correct, I feel sheepish.
So instead I'm just going to go put that song on repeat play and bounce around my living room a while. ;) Glad you enjoyed!
