Music recommendations!

Oct 23, 2007 19:24

Alright all,

I am seriously jonesing for a new music fix, and I have no leads.

Help!

What is the coolest music you know, that I might not know already?

(Assume that all genres are fair game. Weird stuff is welcome, but so is mainstream, and everything in between.)

Man, I'm sorry to be at the end of this list, 'cause I've been discovering a whole mess of cool stuff, but with all those other recommendations... Well, no one else made you one-click internet-ready playlists, did they?

Someone already mentioned Regina Spektor, but now I've moved on the Nellie McKay--OMFG.

In other news, Nightwish is the best metal-influenced opera band ever. The sort of music you'd listen to while fighting giants. Or, you know, running in place on the treadmill.

Finally, there's Wolfdog, but I think he only distributes via metafilter:

No, no they didn't, and you get serious points for that.

Also, Nightwish? Wow. You're not kidding. That's freakin' awesome.

The Nellie McKay is funky... I particularly like the second track.

Thanks!

Also, "distributes by metafilter" seems to mean "not easily downloadable", is that accurate?

Oo! And there's HumanWyne, a bit like Dresden Dolls but a bit more Kurt Weil/ dark carnival merry-go-round/ cabaret.

And if you don't own the album "Where's Neil When you Need Him?" go out and buy it NOW!
It's a compilation of stuff inspired by Neil's writings, featuring Voltaire, Tori, CruxShadows, and a celtic tune by a German band. It's really freakin' awesome.

You probably know this by now but I can't advocate Rasputina enough. Reading through the other comments, Zoe Keating is awesome as well. She was a part of Rasputina for a couple of years. Regina Spektor is great. DeVotchka, The Dresden Dolls. And Nightwish is pretty damn amazing for what it is, hehe.

The Bowmans are pretty great too, you'd like them. They're much fun in concert.
Also I recommend Nest and Tenhi for some Northern folk ambiance.

And obviously, the more obscure Tori Amos. Especially involving the harpsichord.

Having already pushed my Decemberists and Tarkio fixations on you. I would offer up a few things I have been listening to a lot lately:

Dear Leader (Indie Rock, really catchy)
Immortal Technique (hip hop, politically charged)
Arcade Fire (indie, odd like Decemberists)
The Cruxshadows (goth and dancy)
Levellers (rock with fiddles, big in the UK, underrated here)

Of course, I can let you borrow any CDs you want. :)
