The rules are fairly simple, though there is a lot of in depth strategy involved allowing for vast differences in skill. There's a handicap system in place so that players of different skill can play a reasonably even game. Beginners start at 30kyu (I think) and players get stronger as the number goes to 1 kyu, then you have dan players, where increasing score is better. Strongest player at the tournament was a 3 dan. For each grade difference between two players the weaker player gets a handicap stone (up to 9 stones usually) on a 19x19 board. I'm only a 13kyu myself, not even single figures ^^"
