HotApp allows single keystrokes, rather than multi-key shortcuts. In addition, it does more than just launch applications: system actions (sleep, volume up/down, hide/show dock, etc.), key remappings, control panels, URLs... lots of stuff. I probably launch applications 50/50 with LaunchBar and HotApp. LaunchBar tends to be just a little bit sluggish on my system (G4/400.)

The thing that brought Terminal.app back into my favorable zone: the Jaguar addition of command-double-clicking to launch URLs automatically. It's not great, it's not as good as NiftyTelnet's, but it's there. They actually fixed both of my Terminal.app gripes: that one, plus not being able to put the command-key-number combination in the title bar.

Do you use VirtualDesktop's focus-follows-mouse?
