Hi All.

I am planning on getting "voice" in hebrew as a tattoo... but to be honest, I am unsure of the exact translation and everything. If anyone could help me out- I would really appreciate it. Thanks- Louise.

קול

Qol - qof, waw, lamed.
If you want to vocalize it, the waw has a holem.

I'm not sure whether it's relevant, but if you're interested, the Hebrew Bible frowns on tattoing (Leviticus 19:28).

Louise, the word you are looking for is קוֹל. It's pronounced like the English word coal. The word has a range of meanings: speech, call, cry, sound, voice, noise. . . As far as spelling goes, the little dot over the middle letter is optional. It is a vowel similar to an O. Usually the vowels are not written.

Why do you want this particular word in this particular language? I am very curious.

As another poster hinted, some people feel that tattoos are prohibited by the Bible. (Others disagree with this interpretation.) In particular, modern Orthodox Judaism prohibits tattoos. These would be virtually the only people you'd bump into that would be able to read your tattoo, other than the random language nerd or seminary student.

As an alternative, have you thought about lemon chicken?

I guess hebrew is paying homage to my jewish heritage. the word "voice" to me symbolizes many things..

I understand that few would understand the word, but I don't really think tattoos are for other people, if you get what I mean.

קוֹל does not strike me as a beautiful Hebrew word. I always thought לֵבָב (layvav, heart) was a beautiful word. Or לַיְלָה (lylah, night). My girlfriend named her cat לַיְלָה. I guess it's because I always think of קוֹל as "to call out", which in English is significantly less poetic than voice.
