"I liked it when my mother tried to teach me things, when she paid attention. So often when I was with her, she was unreachable. Whenever she turned her steep focus to me, I felt the warmth that flowers must feel when they bloom through the snow, under the first concentrated rays of the sun".

White Oleander is my number one favorite book, hands ( Read more... )

Ooh, yay! I'm super excited! I need a new book so bad, and I love extra surprises! Did you want me to reimburse you for the book?

why was the movie horrendous? I actually liked the movie, and I saw it first, without realizing that there was a book first. I agree with you about the book, I think also that it is a very California novel. You have to have been from there to really appreaciate a lot of the places she describes in the book.

It was horrendous because it left out some of her most crucial experiences that really shape/mold her into who she becomes.

that's true, but what I liked was how the dialog was almost the same in the movie as in the book. And Astrid was a little more likeable in the movie, in the end of the book she was becoming more like her mother, going through men that cared for her and not really letting anything touch her.

That's true, about the dialog ... but I was incredibly disappointed that Olivia & Amelia were left out.

My favorite, hands down, too. I didn't even know I could love reading a book that much until I read White Oleander! Sometimes I just open a random page, and read for hours from that point. I don't think I've ever fully re-read it, but I love just reading it randomly.
