So in the case most similar (AFAICT) to the one at hand, the con disinvited someone who said/did something controversial, and there was no downside. Interesting....

Not quite the same thing, but close: Minicon invited Mike Jittlov, Wizard of Speed and Time, who said he couldn't come unless we paid him a speaking fee. We declined.

I don't think that's remotely close to the same sort of thing. That's a failure to come to agreement, not a disinvitation.

That probably explains why (now that I think on it) I've seen Jittlov's films at lots of conventions but never Jittlov himself.

Yes, I agree with Beth, in that I was thinking of GoHs who were publicly announced and THEN disinvited by the con. I was mostly wondering what it takes for a con to effectively disown a GoH publicly.
