I'm currently rooming in with my preemie (born 13 wks early, now 10 wks old). All day we've been cue feeding, so approximately every 2 hrs. Her fabulous nurse just told me to give her a paci or she'll be a "snacker". -_- Oh and "A little crying won't hurt her.". Ugh. Yeah, because breastfeeding and nodding off is sooo much worse than wasting ( Read more... )

You should make it clear that you DO NOT want her to have a paci no matter what, when ur not there.

Good thing you are nearly out of there <3

Well, for early preemies, pacis can be good in certain scenarios, BUT, it shouldn't be a mom-substitute when mom is there. She won't have pacis at home. Why should she need one while we room in?

That's kind of stupid. Every 2 hours isn't snacking for a 37-weeker, it's just normal. In fact, cluster feeding at certain times of the day, especially the evening is normal for a pretty long time (enjoy it, because it's the only time you'll get to read a book in peace before the kid is 5 or so). Still, all this means you'll be out of there soon :-) Incidentally, my kiddo used a paci extensively in the nicu, but after we got home he lost interest. It would have been useful in certain situations (like the car) but no go, he would just spit it out.

that just sounds... weird. I've never heard of anyone saying that. I know one mother who was told to let her preemie eat as much as he wanted whenever he wanted, that it wouldn't hurt him, he was growing.
