~"~
Minsoo was there when Byunghun was born.
It wasn’t like he remembered any of it, but he was there indeed, in his mother’s arms, nineteen days after his first birthday. He was there, witnessing the birth of his mother’s best friend’s first son, Byunghun. He didn’t remember it, but his mother said that he didn’t want to be separated from Byunghun, so he cried, hard, when visiting hour ended and they had to go home. After, his mother would bring him along whenever she visited her friend in the hospital.
I.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun started pre-school.
He remembered, that day, Byunghun was so shy and timid and he would cling onto his mother or Minsoo. And then, because he was probably unable to enjoy himself in class with his friends and teacher, he started crying. Minsoo had acted on instinct, running straight to Byunghun’s class to calm him down as no one was capable of doing that besides him and Byunghun’s mother. He stayed with Byunghun for the rest of the class. (Minsoo didn’t remember this but since then, Byunghun refused to attend classes unless Minsoo stayed with him.)
II.
Minsoo was there (to catch him) when Byunghun fell off a tree.
They had been playing together at the usual park near their houses, with their mothers a good distance away from them. Byunghun had felt a bit naughty, climbing a tree even when Minsoo told him not to. The mothers weren’t looking, so if anything happened, Minsoo would have to take responsibilities. Soon after Minsoo’s last plea for Byunghun to come down, Byunghun slipped and fell. He slipped and fell, but Minsoo was beneath the tree the whole time, so he managed to catch Byunghun before he hit the ground. Instead, he hit the ground. With Byunghun on top of him. Their mothers scolded them afterwards, of course, but Byunghun was clinging onto him, crying because he was scared and because he felt terrible for Minsoo. Minsoo didn’t mind though, because he was fine, and he got a handful of Byunghun in his bed that night.
III.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun had his first love.
Byunghun was a freshman at junior high when he laid his eyes on a beautiful, fair skinned, long haired girl. She was petite and cute; the type that made people rush to protect her from anything that could be harmful. Minsoo encouraged, pushed, told, did everything for Byunghun to confess to her. Byunghun didn’t though, because he was still that shy and insecure little boy.
IV.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun had his first girlfriend.
His girlfriend was the same girl he fell in love with during his early freshman year, and it turned out that she had been interested in Byunghun as well, so she confessed to him in the middle of their second year. Byunghun’s feeling hadn’t changed; he was still in love with her, and so he confessed as well. They finally became a happy couple, and Minsoo was happy for him, but he felt uneasy for some reason. He only understood that it was loneliness he felt when Byunghun began doing everything with his girlfriend; shopping, eating, playing - everything. (Later on, that loneliness turned into jealousy and deep inside his heart, Minsoo secretly wished for their break up.)
V.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun had his first kiss.
He didn’t mean to see it or anything - why would he want to see that? He was only on his way to Byunghun’s classroom, about to ask him to go home together when he saw the scene unfolding before his eyes. It was quick but enough for it to be burned beneath Minsoo’s eyelids forever. One second, Byunghun was leaning closer to his girlfriend, and the next - Minsoo didn’t even want to remember. Sometimes he wondered as to why he should remember at all; it was an unpleasant experience and he wanted to erase it so much. He went home alone, and ignored Byunghun’s texts and calls for the rest of the day, telling him that he was exhausted when Byunghun confronted him the next day. Byunghun didn’t buy it, but decided to drop the topic.
VI.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun broke up with his girlfriend.
Minsoo went to a high school not far from the junior high school he attended and it really was inevitable that he had to pass by the school twice a day. He was on his way home when he saw Byunghun and his girlfriend by the school’s gate, the atmosphere around them a bit tense and weird. Minsoo stopped on his tracks, out of their visions, watching silently. A moment later, he could see the girl bowing to Byunghun while said boy only stood there, unmoving even after she walked away, passing by Minsoo. Before Minsoo knew how to react to this, Byunghun saw him and gave him a bitter smile.
Hyung, she broke up with me. Said she wanted to concentrate on her studies because she wanted to attend that high-leveled high school on the other side of this country. That’s a bullshit, isn’t it? She’s just bored with me, isn’t she?
It was only when he saw Byunghun’s deeply hurt expression and tearful eyes that Minsoo realized that the reason he didn’t want Byunghun to be away from him was because he loved that boy so, so much. (And that he actually didn’t know the girl’s name, but Minsoo didn’t care about that at all.)
VII.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun decided to be a delinquent.
A couple of days before Byunghun’s first day at high school, Minsoo came to his house to stay over. After dinner and movie marathon, Byunghun said it out of the blue - that he wanted to put a bad image on himself. Minsoo couldn’t say anything, only staring at Byunghun with wide, clearly surprised eyes. The younger boy laughed humorlessly, waving a hand, saying that it wasn’t like anything would change between them and their families. That he’d always be the Lee Byunghun they’d known all their life. When finally asked why, Byunghun simply replied with a cliche; to change his shy, quiet image. He knew it’d be tough, but if he could do almost everything with Minsoo, then why not with other people? Minsoo stayed quiet even after they got ready for sleep, although not forgetting to say good night to Byunghun.
The next day, Minsoo accompanied Byunghun to a hairstylist. On his first day at high school, Byunghun got disapproving looks from everyone they saw because of his blond hair. Byunghun didn’t even spare them a glance.
Minsoo was there (and cried) when Byunghun graduated high school with a lot of effort.
Byunghun had been difficult ever since he started high school; Minsoo wasn’t an exception of that attitude. Minsoo was asked by Byunghun’s mother to tutor him in every subject, but Byunghun wasn’t willing to cooperate. He only realized how important it was to have good grades for his future on his last year. Although Minsoo’s - who had become even busier as a university student - help had been rejected at first, Byunghun admitted that he learned better with the older. After a year of tutoring, Minsoo could finally see Byunghun, in his uniform, proudly stepping up the stage when his name was called and receiving his certificate of graduation. Watching it brought uncalled tears to his eyes, and without warning, they rolled down Minsoo’s cheeks. (Byunghun cried as well, but that happened after the ceremony ended, in his mother’s arms.)
Minsoo was there when Byunghun was accepted to the university he wanted to get in to so much.
That university was, unsurprisingly enough, the university Minsoo was currently attending. It was a boarding school and the facilities were accommodating. Also, Minsoo’s roommate had just graduated, so fate had it that Byunghun be his roommate. But that time, when Byunghun practically flew into Minsoo’s room when he was at home, both men didn’t know about that. They laughed while hugging each other, happy to hear such good news and glad because Byunghun had pestered Minsoo nonstop about how he should pull a few strings to ease his way in. Minsoo didn’t, of course.
VIII.
Minsoo was there when Byunghun said that he might be in love with a guy.
It was when they were alone in their room, Minsoo working on his assignments and Byunghun scribbling something in his notes. They were both too occupied with what they were doing, so it was really out of thin air when Byunghun suddenly broke the silence.
Hyung, I think I’m in love with someone.
Minsoo’s heart stopped for a second, and it took him an entire minute to recover. That’s good, because he didn’t know what else to say. Byunghun hummed a response.
Even if this someone is a guy?
If he had the will to just go out of the room, he would, but sadly, Minsoo cared for Byunghun too much not to leave him just like that. Why are you telling me this?
Byunghun chuckled. Hyung, that’s like asking why water is water. Or why Chanhee is Chanhee.
Lee Chanhee. That guy was weird enough in his approaches to befriend Byunghun. But it was also thanks to that weirdness that Byunghun had piqued an interest on him, thus he decided to accept him as a friend. Now, they were more often referred to as the campus’ ‘two idiots,’ not because they were stupid, but because they always did stupid things together (while sometimes dragging poor Minsoo into their ingenious plans). Minsoo knew how close they were and how much Byunghun trusted Chanhee.
Now he had a guess as to who this someone was.
I see. Well, personally I don’t see why it’s wrong to like someone, even if that someone is a guy.
And although Minsoo was rewarded with Byunghun’s bright smile, he could hear his own heart breaking.
He didn’t know how much longer he could stay with Byunghun, before totally breaking his heart into an irrepairable state.

A/N: There you go, lol. I was going to finish this first before posting it and make this a one-shot, but apparently my brain's current condition is holding me back from doing that. So yeah, there's gonna be another part to this fic, probably a longer one? We'll see~ /shot. Btw, those numbers mean nothing, really, they're only there to mark the 'heart-breaking events,' heheh. Hope you enjoy this and please forgive any fails~
