Baekhyun never thought of himself as special. He was just a pretty ordinary guy whose parents happened to own the biggest farm in the village. His older brother was the number one candidate to settle down with for the girls. Baekhyun was plain, delicate and not too tall. No one ever saw him outside the farm, and it made him even harder to approach. He never complained about it though, because he saw no pleasure in acquainting with other people only for fun-he’d much rather be tending to the horses.
“Baekhyun-ah, you know you can’t live like this forever,” his older brother said finally, attempting to coax Baekhyun into socializing after much consideration. Thinking his little brother would have it a lot easier if he actually opened up to people.
But Baekhyun didn’t like the idea of being pretentious; he liked himself just the way he was. He’d only ever shown his real personality to his family, really, so it wasn’t hard for rumors to start surfacing.
“I’ll go let the horses graze,” was what he said, putting down his spoon on the table before all but running outside the house.
A few moments after Baekhyun’s leave, there was a knock on the door.
Wu Yifan was one of what they called ‘mythical creatures.’ His hide was dark red, eyes a menacing color of gold, his leathery wings were twice the length of his body. He used to be a creature of terror to humans, but as years passed by, he stopped appearing in front of them. Because no matter what Yifan tried to do, people would still be scared of him. It got lonely, he thought.
Like this, today he was flying over villages again. The sun was starting to set, therefore the villagers would be inside their house, preparing dinner for their loved ones; he didn’t have to worry about being seen. But then he saw a field with grazing horses just up front and he frowned. Why were there horses out at this hour?
Just as the thought passed his mind, a lone figure of a boy came into his view.
Shit.
The shadow passing above his head was enormous, and Baekhyun knew that there was no way it was a chunk of cloud covering the sun. Even if it was, it moved too quickly; he was sure he felt wind breezing by as well. So he turned his gaze up to the sky.
The first thing he saw was the wings. They were enormous and they created gusts of wind as they flapped through the air. What astonished him the most was the color. It was a dark, very dark red. Almost as if it were covered in blood. And then realization struck him.
It was a dragon. The creature of legends.
Baekhyun didn’t believe that dragons existed before, because what legendary creature would just disappear from the eyes of the human beings? It was only logical to think that no such creature existed in the first place; he was a ‘see it and believe it’ kind of person, after all. And it certainly didn’t matter that his parents, and all elderly people in the village, was hellbent on not letting children roam the streets at this time of the day because they said a dragon would come and kidnap children.
That wasn’t the case at all, since Baekhyun was sure the dragon just did a 180 degree maneuver in the air and was coming towards him. He just turned nineteen this year so he didn’t qualify as a child. Panic shuddered throughout his body as he stared, feet frozen as if they were nailed onto the soil beneath him. Right before his knees gave up, he suddenly felt suffocated-oxygen intake interrupted.
It made him light-headed, and his entire vision went black.
