I ended up getting a length of chainlink and a fairly heavy-duty padlock from the hardware store. Altogether, only about $15. We'll see how that works out.
Great! And it's good you didn't get a Kryptonite -- they're unbelievably easy to pick, or to pop open with a scissors jack. The only reason messengers use D-locks like Kryptos is because they're quick to put on and take off. The best bike anti-theft device is the beefiest welded chain you can carry, and a big padlock. And if your chain doesn't come with a resilient cover on it, you can take a cruiser bike innertube, cut a narrow section out where the stem is, and feed the chain through it. That'll keep it from chipping your bike's paint.
I knew about d-locks being easy to pick, but there's a different Kryptonite, one that's a huge-link chain with a woven PVC cover. Not sure what the lock itself is like, though. Anyway, that's what has been recommended to me. What I got today was 4' of chain with a padlock that weighs about 5 lbs. I may switch it out for an even heavier-duty chain, but what I've got is OK for now, I think.
I may also look for a Kryptonite chain (I think they call it "New York Tough" or something like that...they have all sorts of grades now) on eBay.
Thanks! I think it will work, but I'm a little nervous about the width of link that I chose -- I could go one higher and I think maybe I should have. On the other hand, the bike isn't worth much and it's likely it won't be much of a target for thieves, but then again, I am going to be storing it outside 100% of the time.
Kryptonite BLOWS. The big thing now is the Pit Bull. I have a cable and U-lock combo with 1500 bucks worth of insurance if my bike gets stolen paid for by the company when you register. The keys are laser cut, and that's a great thing. The combo was about fifty bucks.
