Question... how upset do instructors get if the assignment is "no more than 500 wds" and you cant reduce your response below 600?

It varies with the instructor, but I would guess that 20% in excess of what they asked for would be frowned upon.

It all depends on the instructor. Some will be nasty enough to count the number of words you are over, and deduct points for every word.

You could always make the font smaller. Maybe do 1.7 line spacing instead of 2.0. (Then again, 500 words is short enough that tricks don't really work so well.)

I honestly doubt most would give you much trouble.

That being said, did you get the vibe from your instructor that their highly anal? if so, then I'd worry.

Or perhaps the assignment has some significance to the word limit? I had to write a book review once and the idea was that publishers often set word limits because of space considerations, so the word limit was significant to the point of the assignment

Its an online course, so I have no vibe at all... no in-person contact with the instructor. Its a simple analysis of a hypothetical case study, so I cant see the length being significant.

Some instructors will dock points when assignments are over limit because it adds to their workload. Others see it as a case of not meeting the assignment's guidelines, and dock accordingly.
