Questions, Questions

So I'm sitting here trying to fill out the big thing - the Application for Naturalization, which is Government Speak for "can I please become an American citizen". It's actually fairly straightforward, but I'm battling with two questions for different reasons ( Read more... )

My thought exactly. If I knew what they were after it would be a lot easier to answer.

I'm curious, do they ask you about illegal drugs? *l*

How on earth did you know about that?!? I haven't even told C... nevermind. ;-)

But yes, they do. Have you ever sold or smuggled controlled substances, illegal drugs or narcotics?

It was soooo haaaard not to answers some of those questions in a less than perfectly serious manner. I figured, however, that they would have the last laugh if I did.

Very wise. I don't think that those guys are familiar with the expression "a sense of humor".

Arne? That's it? I have been insanely curious all this time since Carrie first mentioned that you had a name that you hated, long long ago, and it turns out that it's just Arne? I was expecting something like Gottschalk or Baskvald or Gertrude or something. I am a little disappointed, I must say. ;)

I loved the questions on the good moral character section. They were just so.. vague. And also, the fact that the application allowed you to choose your eye color as red or maroon. That was good, too!

Baskvald? Did you make that up? Or is it from M's writing projects? *lol*

I don't really hate Arne, but it happens to be my dad's name and I don't want to get confused with him for several reasons. Also, all the other men in my family has Karl as their first name, and when I was a kid I thought it was a huge injustice that I didn't get the name everyone else has.

Anyway, I think my moral character may be good enough. Missed the red eye option. I guess they're trying to catch the Son of Satan?

M is laughing like a little girl. He says Baskvald is actually from a Michael B. Tretow radio show, and it has been stuck in his head for fifteen years. I have no idea what that means, but maybe you do. I did ask him for a really awful name to use in comparison and that's what he came up with.

That's a reasonable reason. If you just hated it, that would be reasonable, too. I was just expecting something much worse. ;)

Well, that makes sense in a weird way. I have no idea what Baskvald means, but it's very Michael B. Tretow.

personally, i liked the question that went something like "do you intend to blow up any trains while in the U.S.?" i wonder how many colossal idiots they actually catch with that one...

can i ask, though, when you became a permanent resident of the US, did you have to do some interview thing a year later? how did that work? did they send you a letter or some such? i ask because we got chris's green card last march so if there's a year-later thing like i've heard it's coming up soon.

Well, you probably should have a look at his green card and see when it expires. I know they have different rules depending on how long you've been married, how you got into the country and perhaps other things, but for me I first got a conditional residency permit for two years (the condition being that I stayed married to C). 90 days before it expired I had to apply to have the conditions removed. There was no interview involved, but I had to send in all sorts of documentation proving that C and I had a "serious" marriage. Once that was done I got my permanent, unconditional green card.

All this was very clear in the paperwork I got from the INS when I entered the US, so if you haven't heard anything about restrictions then chances are he got an unconditional green card right away. Still, it's a good idea to check and make sure.

ahh, okay. we looked at his and it says it expires in march 2008, so it sounds like the same thing you had. i did remember hearing about this before, i just forgot some of the details. at least we don't have to do it till next year :-)

thanks!
