Car update

Today I brought Carrie and had her try the Mazda as well. Then we hit the Toyota dealer and drove the Corolla. Out of the three cars I thought the Mazda was the nicest one to drive, but it's a close call. On the other hand, the Toyota has a slightly better mileage and comes with more "extras". Funny story. The Mazda sales guy told us that ( Read more... )

I will say that, other than the tires, I have been entirely pleased with my Mazda. It has 103,000 miles on it now, and it still runs fine and is a joy to behold.

Well, my first car was a Mazda 121. I had her (Tilda was her name) from cradle to grave (15 years). She served me well, though she never completely adjusted to the climate when I moved from southern Sweden to the frozen, godforsaken wasteland in the north.

Are these new cars you're looking at or "pre-owned" ones? You've already ruled out the the Civic so it doesn't matter but I was going to say a Civic hybrid would be one I would check out if I were in the market for a new (or new to me) car. Especially if you have a 15-minute kind of local commute, it would be great on gas.

I did run the numbers on the Civic hybrid. It's about $5,000 more than the regular model. Considering how much I would drive it I would have to keep it for at least 10 years to make up the difference, even if the gas price hits $5/gallon.

And it's new cars.

Here in the old country, Toyota has two models that I prefer over the Corola: Aygo and Yaris. We have one of each and they are both 2 years old.

Aygo, less leg room in the back, but better comfort for the driver, much less luggage space, better mileage, sounds like a tin can.

Yaris, more leg room for all, but less comfortable when I drive long distances, more head room, okay mileage, more sturdy sound (not like a tin can, at all). It's the one I prefer to drive.

We love Toyota's service and hubby has fallen in love with buying new cars.
