Why I don't like Otakon

Ok, I've currently got a number of friends whooping it up at Otakon, and many of them actually look like they're having fun. That's good on them, but since 2004, it hasn't been the scene for me. "Why's that, Danny?" you may ask, well, just because I'm sure some of you did, I will tell you ( Read more... )

Yeeah. Chad and I have said a few times over the years how it's odd that Otakon is the closest convention to our house, tons of our far flung friends are there...but we never go. You pretty much summed up why.

I have to agree with you on pretty much every count. It's really fun if you're able to hang with friends, but the crowds make it difficult to spend time with folks you're not splitting a room with.

And the Inner Harbor is very ugh. It's pretty wild that I felt 300% safer in NYC than the Inner Harbor at night.

Animazement's our "home town" con and even it's too crowded for me to relax. (crowds + parents + toddler = PANIC) Otakon's right out for the reasons you mentioned. Nekocon is pretty much the only one I enjoy now.

But...now there is a hotel attached to the BCC (Hilton), two more accessible by skywalk (Sheraton and Hyatt) and one literally right across the street (Days Inn). :p A lot of these complaints could also be leveled at SDCC (especially the cost of food...good lord the cost of food), but I do agree with you in a way. If the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, you deal with those drawbacks. For me, SDCC's benefits still outweigh its drawbacks, while for Otakon it's kind of the other way around now.
