I had GD with my first pregnancy..breakfast I normally had whole grain toast or Cherios. Sometimes I would have an egg and bacon.Just keep an eye on your labels for carbs and sugars...And of course get as much fiber as you can! You learn pretty quick based on your numbers what and how much you can eat keeping your numbers in check. I went to the atkins website for recipes, granted I modified quite a bit but it gives you a general idea of how many carbs/sugars are allotted. I steared clear of milk most of the time as that has high sugar. Keep in mind the more water you drink the more diluted the glucose in your system will get. I only gained 18 lbs with my first pregnancy too. The needles are so tiny and after the first week of testing you become numb to them. you could also ask for a meter that offers alternate testing sites.

It's going to be hard to give up milk in the morning... That's my favorite. The most frustrating part right now is that I don't get the official rules til Monday so I'm scrapping together bits of info from here and there but don't really know what they want for me and my circumstances.

What'd you do for calcium if you stayed away from milk?

I still drank milk, but it was a toss up between drink a half glass of milk or have ice cream... Once you see the dietician and start monitoring you will get the hang of it. Based on my numbers I was able to know what I could eat,how much I could eat,ext... I am lactose intolerant(very mild) so I didn't drink much milk to begin with. Just keep an eye on labels and stay with in the amounts they give you for your sugars/carbs per meal. Good luck!

the finger poking needles really aren't that bad. you don't see them, and in a moment the worst is over. i'm terrerfied of needles, and after a few times. you hardly notice it.

they will prolly tell you no cereals are okay to eat. it made me sad! but OATMEAL! sunny boy, and cream of wheat are okay. just cut out as much sugar you put on them as possible.

and as a happy note, even though i had GD i ended up with a normal weight baby. she was only 7 lbs! not the 8-10 lbs we were expecting! so you can do it!

I'm going to take your word for now about the finger poking needles... I just don't know. I give my cat insulin every day and have poked myself once or twice by accident and those aren't so bad but when I've given blood and they do the poke for the iron test... that freakin' hurts. Might just have to recruit other people to do it to me. :-P (Yes, I know what a baby I sound like... but up until a couple of years ago, I had a panic attack at the thought of *any* needle so... this is going to be tough!)

it is tough! and lemmie tell you! i panic attacked myself several the first several times.. but remember this, your doing it for your baby and your baby's health. that is far more important!

you'll thank yourself when your wee one comes out fine. i did! they will tell you where to poke on your fingers, just remember not to over poke one finger. it hurts and build up a calous! haha.. i did it. oops.

If ya need more words of encouragement, i'm here for ya! you can do it!

Thank you... I appreciate the encouragement!

I've just felt a lot of emotions over the past couple of days... Even though it wasn't completely unexpected, it was still a shock and having so much time between them dumping the news on me by phone (with no real instructions on what to do between now and then) and when I'll actually get to talk to someone isn't helping! I want to do right for my baby but right now I am not sure what right is! Ugh. I'm sure I'll feel a lot better after my appointment on Monday.

Thanks for the tip of the other community. I'll probably check that out.

I'm a little heartbroken over the milk thing... Seems lots of people are told not to have it in the morning. I love milk. Ohwell. It's just 11ish weeks... Hopefully. I'm so scared it won't go away!! :(

I was diagnosed with GD at around 23 weeks and the first thing I thought was, "Oh, God, no, not the finger poking!". Surprisingly, if you do it on the side and squeeze down super hard, it really, really doesn't hurt. (I would've love it someone had reassure me about it --- everyone I complained to, before getting my meter and seeing it was nothing to be scared of, was horrified I would be worried and complaining about a finger prick. That's why people suck, I guess.)

Double up on protein for breakfast --- eggs, sausage, bacon, etc. I rarely eat breakfast myself so I'm probably not much of a help at all but I do second the first comment, about drinking water. Two weeks into my diagnosis of GD, I had a super bad day and devoured a Stouffer's Macaroni & Cheese and half a package of oreos --- two hours later, my sugar tested at 98 and the only thing I could think of was, I had also had about a quart of water to drink while eating.

I can do the water thing! I already drink a couple litres a day, easily.

I'm going to take your word on the needles for now... I'm still scared. :( I know what it feels like from when I donate blood... WAY worse than the actual giant needle. Hopefully they can show me a way to make it hurt less.

I'll have to ask about that... We have a diabetic cat and use 31 gauge needles to give her insulin. I've poked myself once or twice and it wasn't so bad. I'm not sure I get all that much choice on this stuff - My insurance will cover the meter and supplies in full if I get them from their mail order service but I really don't know if I get any say in what type of meter I get. They're supposed to have it for me at my training session on Monday so I guess I'll find out then.
