So I was writing a paper on the estate tax, and I mentioned how cuts in government spending invariably target basic services rather than pork barrel spending because pork barrel spending invariably has congresspeople spending their full political might to defend it, and basic services rarelty have that huge a lobby. By "estate tax", you mean "death tax." Right?

Seriously, cuts in government spending affect the poor and basic services not only because of the reasons you mentioned, but because that's where cuts can EASILY be made.
If you were to cut, say, the military budget, you would have to cut out billions at a time. Then, some crazy nut who thinks that we AREN'T the strongest country in the world about a thousand times over would start screaming about how we don't care about protecting our future. They care about being bombed from people who can't afford to buy food, rather than being afraid that in two generations, our children will be unable to read or form coherent thoughts.

basically, cause the US political system is on crack. And the european one. And Asia and Africa aren't really walks in the park either. Viva la revolucion!

Wellfare is for those who can't make their own way through the world because they have rejected the teachings of our lord and saviour, Jesus Christ. They should be allowed to grow accustomed to the misery of living, for it is paradise compared to the misery that awaits them in the depths of hell.
