I watched the trailer for the upcoming film Bear City, and I think I'd rather slam my balls repeatedly in the driver's side door of a '74 Pinto than see this. It's just like every single other "gay" movie ever made (the focus is on sex, cattiness, and stereotypes), and has about as much to do with actual reality as Narnia. When do we get a real gay ( Read more... )

Sounds like a movie to avoid.

The worst part is that any straight people who hear about the movie, or who get talked into seeing it, will think that's all gay men do is act like dizzy queens and compulsively seek sex.

Ugh.

I hate stereotypes!

The best gay movies I have ever seen are "The Sum Of Us", "Making Love", and " My Beautiful launderette", and " The Lover."

When someone starts filming my work. But theatre's enough for me: film is too heartbreaking and time-wasting for me to pursue on my own.

Hmm....bunch of bears taking drugs, having random parties, cruising for random anonymous sex and being HIV positive? Not really breaking down the walls of stereotypes there.

It was at least well-made and well-intentioned, but pretty far from reality in a lot of ways. Look, I'm all for fantasy, I just would like--for once--to see a bear-themed film that didn't feel like it had to pander to the lowest common denominator.

It breaks new ground, in that there's actually a few dudes with beards, but as I watched the trailer, it brought back memories of why I wish I wasn't gay.

It's like, there's millions of fem guys who wanna shave me, and a few bearded dudes who could care less if I existed.

So the film is accurate, from what I could tell, of what gay life really is (for me anyway) but I don't have any reason to ever see it.

Stereotypes aside, it'd be pretty oxymoronical to have a "gay oriented movie" (i.e. a movie that focuses on the sexual orientation of its characters) without it being about sex in some way, wouldn't it? There's plenty of movies with bearish guys in them in which you never get to know who they go to bed with, and there's a couple movies where one of the characters just happens to be gay while a lot of things not concerning his sexuality happen. I wouldn't call either type of movie "gay oriented" to be honest.
