Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here.

Instructions: Copy this list; bold those books you've read in their entirety. Italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read only an excerpt.

1 Pride and Prejudice ( Read more... )

I'm as guilty as the next. I did manage to find 6 of the books that I have read (or had read to me.) My list included mostly modern works. Notably some of the books considered classics are missing. The bigger question, to me, is should you be reading all these? What purpose does it serve to "War and Peace" or "Pride and Prejudice"? And why are those books more important than "Bridget Jones Diary". (Which is based on "Pride and Prejudice.")

I wondered about Trollope. But now you mention Maughm, Bellows and on...well, I guess it is just very far from a definitive list.
Anyway, you've certainly racked up some.
My take on 'Why read any of these?"
Why not? You'll hardly come of worse.
People don't have to read. Hell, my partner left school at 15, after a useless excuse for an education from a bunch of sadistic nuns, to work down the pits. He can read but not as easily as is taken for granted by many. So he doesn't read much at all.
But in a world of the need for the instant, reading encourages patience, perseverence and a quieted mind.
Besides, it's not like film these days can come close to losing yourself in a book.

I probably should have mentioned that I'm an English teacher.

I suspect everyone would've figured that out regardless!

LOL, I should have guessed. Many of the books on this list that I have read, I read in English class. It IS an interesting mix. I was surprised to see "Watership Down" and the Hitch Hiker's Guide (both of which I love) on the list. The Harry Potter books get better. She learned to write on the job.

Woo hoo! I can't believe I actually read 27 of these books. However, most ofthem were forced down my throat as I went to school. It was nice to see The Handmaid's Tale on the list though. I really like that book.

BTW, I hope it's okay if I add you as a friend. I love finding fellow teachers (even though I only teach elementary!)
