No, this is ongoing from way before the Patriot Act. Interestingly, I talked to about 10 cops there, FBI, DEA, military police, etc. All of them seem to think they can get by just fine with having to get court orders. So it seems that once again, it’s the upper level political appointees (hacks) who are pushing the ability to wiretap without a warrant. More Bush. Anyway, the Senate did not pass the Patriot Act yesterday, so it is on hold until after the first of the year, and 21 key provisions, not sure what they are, expire 12/31. Just about everybody I have discussed this with feels that a court order should be required, that the government should not be able to hold people without accusing them of a crime, or keep them from communicating with their lawyer. Plus all the torture stuff (more torture and spying without court orders keeps coming out every day, almost all of it going straight to the top of the Bush regime.
