Miserable really isn't the word for how everyone is, yet. It's not as bad as it could be, and they've had plenty of stops. It's just that there's no food being traded. So they're down to the tasteless protein that isn't even chicken or beef, just a block of something tasteless

Wash hated the blocks of protein they had to fall back on. Sure, you got your full nutritional value out of them, but he had to force himself to eat it.

Though he was mostly sitting quietly, listening to Mal and Zoe telling one of their war stories. Again. Kaylee and Jayne seemed to love them, but Wash... he just wanted his wife to live in the here and now, not the past. So he was silent, forcing himself to eat and listen attentively, even though it was the last thing he wanted to do.

By the time the story is done - Mal pulling her out of the way in the factory during enemy fire, saving her life, her returning the favor - Kaylee and Jayne are on the edge of their seats. But, once the story is over, and everyone's eaten what they can, Inara leaves first for her shuttle, bidding everyone goodnight, then Kaylee goes, then Jayne.

Zoe stands and starts cleaning things up, still going back and forth a bit with Mal to the point where they're not even really telling complete stories, just starting, then laughing at the memories.

Wash waited for a while, then stood up, rinsing out his cup. "Gonna check the helm... if anyone cares," he muttered, barely able to be heard. Not that anyone would care.

"Okay, bao bei," Zoe laughs softly, definitely not hearing the last part before finishing up. It's thirty minutes before she makes her way to the bridge, draping her arms around Wash from behind, bending to kiss his temple.

"Everything good?"
