I like your re-raise pre-flop, if your read on the player was correct. With AJs, you are hoping for him to push in (so you can fold), for him to fold, or for the flop to hit you hard.
Since you are out of position, you need a plan for what you will do if the flop misses you. There are so many hands that beat you on this flop that you almost have to check-fold here. If you wanted to make a move, you had to do it on the flop, as (like you said) the money wasn't deep enough to call and then raise on the turn.
At least you had the sense to lay it down on the turn, and keep a big enough stack to still have some power.
