I have read in many forums people saying they are staying put in areas that are already under mandatory evacuation notices for Hurricane Rita

I concur. I don't want it to hit me, but that doesn't mean I want it to hit anywhere else either. The mayor of Galveston has very clearly stated that anyone calling 9-1-1 when the hurricane hits will be sorely disappointed. It will eventually be hitting Austin, where I live and even I will be popping out of town for the day because I don't like big storms and they don't like me.

I've heard elsewhere (NMW) that ignoring a mandatory evac in texas is a level 3 felony, and so any idiots who stay are quite likely to be staying in prison.
