While I totally agree that she should not get as much press as she did, while others weren't getting noticed @ all, & I said that when this whole thing was going on... I think that because of the magnification of the case when it happened, that it's appropriate for it to be a headline again. I just wish they knew wtf was going on before they printed it.
yeah and i mean if it was just this story i wouldn't even take notice it's one of many critisisms of what media has deteriated to.. We see it everytime a tragedy happens to a young white girl (Natalee Holloway anybody?) We begin to think wow, this must not ever happen to black or latino girls??? lol no it does... it's just not as entertaining. I seriously feel physically sick when i think about it.
And believe me I'm not immune to a good entertaining story.. I'll read the headlines with great interest too, but the Media has so much power over our subconscious, our level of ignorance, etc... we as much as they need to seriously ch'ch'check ourselves before we wreck ourselves about the kinda stuff we want to see on CNN all day.
It's interesting to see what kind of news hits America... and then to talk to other people in countries like France that know what is going on all around the world. (And then you get Chinese news where every country is having problems except for China.) Even though I listen to the news on the radio, all I know is that the West Niles virus moved to the Bay Area, and that JB Ramsey's killer was found. =P
Totally, and our saving grace is that the critical citizen has a bounty of foreign and independent news available to them through the internet and cable/satellite. :)
Can you imagine if we didn't have that? Like if it was illegal like in China? We'd all be so woefully uninformed and brainwashed and there'd be nothing we could do about it :(
Yah I know! At least we have the internet. But what sucks is that I haven't had as much time lately to read the international news online. I feel so ignorant!
I could not imagine living in China. Oh my, definitely not for me.
everything Anna said...that way i don't have to repeat...lol Kind of sad people need this as a distraction... Hurricane Katrina coverage was the same in a way...The people became specticles, it was quite sad.
This being said...are you planning on seeing the movie World Trade Center? They have been playing on Boston radio stations live 911 calls from people in the towers, I find it SO sad, the first sentence I am already a crying nervous wreck when I'm driving. At the same time it is like a trainwreck, I have to hear it, I am curious.
HMMMmmm i might notta seen it if I understood there was a political agenda, but i'm certainly not opposed to seeing what anybody has to say about any historical tragedy from a humanitarian perspective. I'm offended when 911 is used in innapropriate political statements or propaganda, especially when it's used to justify further atrocities.. but I have nothing against it being used in a scientific, artful, or humanitarian capacity as long as it's honest. I think we can only benefit from that kind of stuff.
If you havn't seen The Downfall yet, I recommend it for the same reason... though it is probably one of the hardest films i've ever sat through - but one of the few films that tries to be completely honest about one of the most difficult times in human history.

to cover up what's really going on in the world.

just to take peoples attention away from real scary issues.
that guy is a freak.. i think he just wants attention.
